Dear parents and carers, yesterday I wrote to explain that we intended to stay open throughout the heatwave, because we know that the best place for pupils is in school, learning, eating well and being looked after. We still believe this.
Because we are committed to prioritising pupil welfare, we will remain open on Wednesday and Thursday, with an adjustment to the school day in the afternoon. Most pupils will leave school at 1.40pm on both days. This will allow pupils to attend school, learn, eat well and stay hydrated in the morning, while reducing the time they spend in school during the hottest part of the day. We are currently planning for all pupils to return to school as normal on Friday when we expect the building to be cooler.
Some pupils may benefit from staying on site in cooler spaces and air-conditioned rooms. Senior leaders are calling those families now to discuss this directly and make arrangements where needed. If you do not receive a call, please collect your child or make arrangements for them to go home at 1.40pm on both days. If you do not get a call from us but want your child to remain in a cooler space until 3pm or later, please email sarah.donachy@arkacton.org.
Pupils should still attend school as normal in the morning, bring a refillable water bottle, and wear the adapted uniform previously shared. Thank you for your support and understanding. We will continue to monitor the building carefully and will update families if anything changes.
